The Bavarian fishing exam (Fischerprüfung Bayern), explained in English
Not official. Fischerprüfung Bayern 2026 is an independent app. It is not affiliated with the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture (LfL) or the Landesfischereiverband Bayern. The official practice exam is in the exam's online system.
In Bavaria you take the fishing exam on a computer at a test centre. You get 60 questions, 12 from each of the 5 subjects, each with 3 answers of which one is correct. You have 60 minutes. You pass with at least 45 correct answers, as long as you have no more than 6 errors in any subject. The exam is in German. Before you can sit it, you need a prep course of at least 30 hours.
Practise by subject and track your progress with Fischerprüfung Bayern 2026 for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
How the Bavarian exam works
The exam authority is the LfL (Institute for Fisheries, Starnberg). The Landesfischereiverband Bayern runs the exams and sets dates and venues. The rules are in § 4 AVBayFiG and the LfL guide to the online exam (in German).

What „online“ means in Bavaria
You cannot take the exam at home. „Online“ means the questions are answered on a computer at the test centre. What you do online: register, pay the exam fee, pick a date, print your invitation letter (Ladungsschreiben) and take the official practice exam.
The exam is in German: how to study the wording
The LfL publishes the question texts for free on its „Prüfungsfragen“ page. Learn the German terms for fish, gear and rules as they appear in the questions. A dictionary helps, but at the exam you only see German, so practise reading the original wording until it feels routine.
Prep course: at least 30 hours
Without proof of a prep course you are not admitted. Under the LfL training plan valid from 1 October 2026 (PDF, German) it has at least 30 hours of 60 minutes, spread over at least 4 days with no more than 8 hours a day. 8 of those hours are practical training in person. There are three formats: in-person, live online, and since 1 October 2026 online self-study for the theory part. Find courses in the online system under „Kurse“.
Registration, fee and exam day
- You can register all year; there are no deadlines. Exams run several times a year in different places.
- Pay by credit card or PayPal for immediate access, or by bank transfer (about five days). The LfL guide lists the current fee. A cancelled booking forfeits the fee.
- On the day, arrive about 15 minutes early with your invitation letter and a valid photo ID. Enter your exam PIN and wait for the start signal.
- If you fail, you can retake the exam as often as you like, paying the full fee each time. Cheating means a three-month ban.
Getting the Fischereischein
With the certificate you apply at your municipality (BayernPortal, German). You pay a fee plus the fishing levy, either for 5 years or once for life. Adults and young people from 14 who pass get a lifetime licence. You also need a permit for each water you fish.
Tourists
Adults without a residence in Germany can get an annual fishing licence without the exam. It is valid for at most 3 months a year.
Practice options
Start with the official practice exam in the online system: 60 random questions from the full pool. Then use your course materials. An app such as Fischerprüfung Bayern 2026 can add a study mode, progress per subject and offline practice. The full German guide is at Fischerprüfung Bayern 2026.
FAQ
How many questions are on the Bavarian fishing exam?
60. Twelve come from each of the 5 exam subjects. Each question has 3 answers and one is correct. The system draws them at random from the LfL question pool, which the LfL describes as about 1,000 text questions and 50 picture questions.
How many mistakes can I make?
At most 15 of 60, and no more than 6 in any one subject. So you need at least 45 correct answers (75 %). Neglecting one subject can make you fail even with a high total.
Can I take the exam in English?
No. The Bavarian Fischerprüfung is, as a rule, held only in German. Study the German wording of the questions, not a translation.
Can I take the exam online from home?
No. „Online“ means you answer on a computer in a certified test centre under supervision. Registration, payment and the official practice exam are online. Since 1 October 2026 the theory part of the prep course can also be done as online self-study; the practical part is always in person.
How do I get the fishing licence after the exam?
Take your exam certificate, a passport photo and your ID card or passport to the municipality where you live. You pay a fee and the fishing levy (Fischereiabgabe). To actually fish, you also need a permit (Erlaubnisschein) for the specific water.
