The Italian driving theory test (patente B), explained in English
Unofficial. Quiz Patente - Driving License is an independent app. It is not affiliated with the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport or the Motorizzazione Civile. The official quizzes are free on the Portale dell’Automobilista.
Italy's patente B theory test has 30 statements that you mark true or false, drawn at random from the ministry's list. You have 20 minutes and may make at most 3 mistakes. You take it at the Motorizzazione Civile after applying with form TT 2112, and you get 2 attempts within 6 months.

The 2021 change: why many sites still say 40 questions
Until 19 December 2021 the test had 40 questions in 30 minutes with up to 4 mistakes. Since 20 December 2021 it has been 30 statements in 20 minutes with up to 3 mistakes. The same format applies to categories A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE. If a guide says 40 questions, it is out of date.
The exam language
Plan to sit the test in Italian. Practise with the Italian wording of the official statements, and learn key words such as «sempre» (always), «solo» (only) and «non» (not), because one word can flip the answer. Ask your local Motorizzazione office (UMC) or driving school whether another language is available where you live.
Application, documents and official fees
You must be 18. Apply with form TT 2112 at a Motorizzazione Civile office or online on the Portale dell’Automobilista. Bring an ID document, your codice fiscale (tax code), a recent medical certificate and your PagoPA payment receipts.

- practical test booking: €16 stamp (N019);
- Sicily, Valle d’Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia have different fees;
- the medical certificate and driving school are paid separately.
Timeline
- 2 theory attempts within 6 months of applying;
- the foglio rosa (learner's permit) is issued only after you pass the theory test and is valid for 12 months;
- up to 3 practical tests, starting from the month after you pass the theory;
- at least 6 hours of driving-school lessons, including night, motorway and main extra-urban roads, before you book the practical test.
How to practise
Start with the free official quizzes on the Portale dell’Automobilista. Study by topic, then take full timed tests of 30 statements in 20 minutes and review your mistakes. Book the exam once you stay under 3 mistakes several times in a row. That is our advice, not an official rule.
The app
On the US App Store the app is called «Quiz Patente - Driving License»; on the Italian store it is «Patente B - Quiz Esame 2026». It runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later. According to its App Store listing, it offers timed mock exams, quizzes by topic, a mistakes-only review mode, statistics, flashcards and offline use, with no account. FAQ
How many questions are on the patente B theory test?
30 statements, each marked true or false, drawn at random from the ministry's list. You get 20 minutes. This format has applied since 20 December 2021; before that it was 40 questions in 30 minutes.
How many mistakes are allowed?
Three at most. A fourth mistake means you fail, so you need 27 correct answers out of 30.
Can I take the test in English?
Do not count on it. The test is normally taken in Italian, so study the Italian wording of the official statements. Ask your local Motorizzazione office about other languages.
How much does it cost?
The official fees are €26.40 plus a €16 revenue stamp (PagoPA code N067) for the application and theory test, and another €16 stamp (N019) for the practical test. The medical certificate and driving school cost extra. Some special-statute regions have different fees.
How many attempts do I get?
Two theory attempts within 6 months of your application. After you pass, the foglio rosa (learner's permit) is valid for 12 months and allows up to 3 practical tests.
